Terms
The agreement between you and Doomsday One when you use Retro Play or buy a game here. Plain words, and they mean what they say.
Who you are dealing with
Retro Play is run by Doomsday One. The service lives at retroplay.network and its job is leaderboards, awards, friends and presence for games running on real retro machines.
Using the site, signing in from a game, or buying something means you accept what is on this page.
Your account
- One person, one account. Your gamertag is public; keep it civil, and do not take a name to pass yourself off as somebody else.
- You are responsible for your password and for the PIN your machine signs in with. Tell us if either gets out.
- Scores are for playing. Posting a score a game did not produce — a patched build, a tampered wire, a program pretending to be one — gets the score removed, and doing it repeatedly gets the account closed.
- Be decent on the boards and in the community. We will take down what is abusive, illegal, or there to harass somebody, and close the account behind it if that is what it takes.
- You can delete your account at any time from Account → Privacy.
Buying a game
- Prices are in US dollars and are shown before you pay. Tax is added where the law says it must be.
- Payment is taken by Paddle, who are the merchant of record for the sale. Your card details go to Paddle and never to us. Paddle's own terms apply to the payment itself, and your receipt comes from them.
- When the payment clears, the game appears in your library and the store page offers the download for your machine.
- Every download is stamped to your account. It is for you: putting a copy where other people can take it is a breach of these terms, and we can revoke it.
What you get, and for how long
The game is yours. Buying it gives you a permanent, personal, non-exclusive licence to run that game on machines you use. There is no subscription, no expiry, and no check-in.
It works offline. These are programs that run on your own hardware from your own card. Once it is downloaded, the game plays with nothing connected — no account, no sign-in, no Retro Play at all.
What the service adds is the online part around the game: leaderboards, awards, the daily, presence, friends, and the store you bought it from. That part, and only that part, needs us to be here.
Keep a copy. You can download what you own as often as you like while the service is up, and we would rather you kept the zip somewhere safe than relied on us to hold it for you.
Games by other people
Retro Play sells games made by developers other than Doomsday One. The game is theirs; we run the shop and the service around it. If a developer takes their game off the store, it stays in the library of everybody who already bought it, and the download stays available for as long as the service runs.
If Retro Play stops
This is a small service run at our own expense, and it is not guaranteed in perpetuity. If it costs more to keep on than it brings in, or it stops making sense to run, Doomsday One may reduce it, suspend it, or close it down.
If we close it:
- We will say so at least 30 days beforehand, on the site and by email to every account.
- Everything you own stays downloadable for the whole of that notice, so take your copies.
- Your games keep working. They run on your machine, offline, exactly as they did the day before. What goes away is the online part — boards, awards, the daily, presence, the store.
- If you bought a game within 30 days of us announcing the closure, write in and we will refund it.
Nothing here lets us take back a game you have already bought.
What we do not promise
The service is offered as it is. We do not promise it will be up at all times, that a board will never be rebuilt, or that it will suit a particular purpose. We keep backups and we take care, but a hobby service is a hobby service.
Where the law allows us to limit what we owe you, our liability for anything connected to the service is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before it happened. Nothing here removes rights you have as a consumer, and nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, or fraud — those cannot be signed away and we are not trying to.
Changing these terms
We can change this page — the law changes, the service changes. A change that matters to you will be announced on the site before it takes effect, and it will not apply backwards to a game you have already bought.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts there can hear any dispute. If you live elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, you keep the protection of your own country's consumer law.
